Voici les quatres versions du tableau réalisé par Martin van Meytens (1695-1770) à la demande
de l’Impératrice Marie-Thérèse d’Autriche (1717-1780). Le premier, datant de 1752 et conservé Ã
la Hofburg à Innsbruck, nous présente l’Impératrice Marie-Thérèse et son époux François Ier (1708-
1765) sur la terrasse de Schönbrunn, en compagnie de leurs neuf enfants.
De gauche à droite: François Ier,Marie-Anne (1738-1789), Marie-Christine (1742-1798), Marie-
Josèphe (1751-1767), Marie-Amélie (1746-1804), Jeanne-Gabrielle(1750-1762), Joseph (1741-
1790), Léopold (1747-1792), Marie-Elisabeth (1743-1808), Marie-Thérèse et Charles-Joseph (1745-
1761).
La deuxième version, datant de 1754 est conservée à Schönnbrunn. La composition reste quasi
identique, à l’exception du groupe central où furent ajoutés les deux derniers nés du couple
impérial: Marie-Caroline (1752-1814) (en robe bleue) étant penchée sur le berceau occupé
par Ferdinand (1754-1806).
Sur le troisième tableau, datant de 1755 et conservé a Versailles, apparaît Marie-Antoinette (1755-
1793) qui a pris la place de Ferdinand dans le berceau tandis que ce dernier se retrouve au premier
plan, assis sur un petit fauteuil.
Enfin, sur la version de 1756, conservée au Palais Pitti à Florence, le dernier né de la famille
impériale, Maximilien (1756-1801) est dans le berceau, tandis que Marie-Antoinette se trouve a la
gauche de Marie-Caroline.Marie-Thérèse et Françoissont alors entourés de leurs treize enfants
survivants sur les seize nés en vingt ans de mariage.

There are three??? versions of this painting by Martin van Meytens, official portrait artist for the
Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty. They can be dated back to 1754 and were completed at about a year
from one another. The painting on show in the Pitti Palace is the last one and shows the entire
family, including the youngest, Maximilian, while the first, which is kept in Vienna in Schönbrunn
Palace, shows only eleven children, without Marie Antoinette (enfant No 15, dernière reine de
France), who is in the painting which belongs to the collection at Versailles.
Pitti: The portrait came to Florence with Peter Leopold, shown standing at the far right, when he came from Vienna as
the young successor of his father, Francis Stephen, the first Grand Duke of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty, who began
their rule over Florence in 1737 (-1790).
