JAN GOSSAERT GEN. MABUSE (1478-1532)
DANAE (1527) wo?
Oak, 114,3 x 95,4 cm
Gossaert depicts the story of how Zeus, the
father of the gods, descended upon King
Argos' daughter in a shower of gold,
thereby fathering Perseus. The
mythological theme and the architectural
motifs taken from the Antique all combine
to create a distinctly Renaissance work.
The painted framing element works like a
shrine that effectively encircles the rather
erotic theme.
